QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University football team picked up its third victory of the season, defeating Robert Morris 31-17 Saturday afternoon (Sept. 30).
Through the first quarter of action neither team found the end zone.
The Eagles were driving mid-way through the first quarter when Shane Barrett (St. Peters, MO/ Fort Zumwalt East) intercepted Kenyatte Allen's pass in the endzone to stop the Eagles scoring threat.
The Hawks struck on their first offensive play of the second quarter when Dylan Rosado (Greenwood, IL/ Greenwood Community) broke free for an 80-yd touchdown run, giving QU a 7-0 lead.
After that drive, the rest of the second quarter mirrored the first. However, Michael Klotz (Millstadt, IL/ Oakville) was able to stretch the lead to 10-0 with a 36-yard field goal right before halftime.
Robert Morris mounted an impressive drive to open the second half, using nearly nine minutes. The Eagles got on the board with 6:10 remaining in the third after a fourteen play, 77 yard drive capped by a 20 yard field goal from Trenton Daley.
Robert Morris' second drive was stopped at their own 27 the Eagles were forced to punt. Shane Barrett returned the Eagles punt to the 14 yard line. The Hawks scored on the next play when Chris Harris (Springfield, IL/ Sacred Heart Griffin) dashed into the end zone from 14 yards out to put the Hawks up 17-3.
The Hawks took this commanding lead into the fourth quarter, but Robert Morris battled back.
With 7:22 remaining in the game the Eagles cut the score to 17-10 when Edward Clark capped off an eight play, 61 yard drive with a four yard touchdown run.
Andrew Rund (St. Louis, MO/ Saint Louis Priory) fumbled on the next drive, allowing the Eagles to recover and gain great field position at the QU 23 yard line. Two plays and 23 yards later, Darius Burse scored on a two yard touchdown run to tie the game at 17-17.
After the Eagles tied the game, QU was able to use of 4:56 on their next drive. With 1:49 remaining in the game, Chris Harris scored and gave the Hawks a 24-17 lead when he capped off an eleven play, 70 yard drive with a four yard touchdown run. Harris added some insurance when dashed 57 yards for his third touchdown of the game with 0:49 left in the game, giving QU a 31-17 lead.
This was the final scoring play of the game and the Hawks picked up their third victory of the season. QU remains undefeated at home in 2017.
Andrew Rund was 11-21 for 125 yards and Chris Harris rushed 18 times for 107 yards and three scores.
TJ Daniels (St. Louis, MO./ SLUH) lead the Hawks with 11 tackles, 5.5 for loss including a sack and a fumble recovery.
The Hawks are now 3-2 on the season. QU plays William Jewell next Saturday (Hawktober. 7) at QU Stadium.
