Hawks Fall To William Jewell 45-28

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University football team fell to GLVC opponent William Jewell 45-28 Saturday night (Hawktober 7).  The Hawks were outscored 38-14 in the second half by the Cardinals of William Jewell. 

The Cardinals 12 play opening drive looked to put points on the board early.  Brad Strauss took a shot to the QU end zone but was intercepted by DT Christiansen at the QU two yard line.  Christiansen returned his interception back to the Hawk 19 yard line.  

The Hawks drive stalled on a three and out and they were forced to punt.  

William Jewell wasted no time scoring on their second drive.  The Cardinals covered 81 yards in three plays in just over a minute of game time to take a 7-0 lead.  Brad Strauss connected with Keelon Vann for the 27 yard score.  

A touchback on the ensuing kick off gave the Hawks the ball at their own 25 yard line.  QU answered with a 10 play, 75 yard drive capped off by a one yard Dylan Rosado (Greenwood, IL/ Greenwood Community) touchdown run to tie the score at 7-7.  

The next three possessions resulted in punts before the Hawks took over with 10:24 remaining in the first half.  With the ball at the QU 41 yard line Andrew Rund (St. Louis, MO/ St. Louis Priory) was intercepted by Thaddeus Glenn.  Glenn returned the interception into Hawk territory at the QU 35 yard line.  It was Rund's first interception since being named starting quarterback. 

The Hawks defense held firm forcing the Cardinals to attempt a 29-yard field goal.  Dalton Dye's field goal attempt went wide right and the Hawks took over at their own 20 with the score still tied 7-7.  

QU went three and out and Nathan Kewney (Quincy, IL/ Quincy) drilled a 51 yard punt down to the William Jewell 20 on the Hawks next possession.  

The Cardinals were also forced to punt on their next possession, giving the Hawks the ball back with 1:54 remaining in the first half.  

The Hawks took over at their own 43, looking to take the lead headed into halftime.  

Rund completed five passes for 55 yards to get the Hawks down to the William Jewell two yard line.  Dominique Bobo (St. Louis, MO/ Chaminade) scored from two yards out to give the Hawks a 14-7 lead with 46 seconds remaining in the first half.  

William Jewell gave the ball right back to the Hawks on their next possession fumbling at their own 30 yard line.  

The Hawks couldn't extend their lead after a 39 yard field goal was missed by freshman kicker Michael Klotz (St. Louis, MO./ Oakville).

QU took a 14-7 lead into the half.  

On the second play of the second half, Rund found Kody Wood (Jacksonville, IL./ Jacksonville) for a 64 yard touchdown catch to put the Hawks up 21-7 just 44 seconds into the third quarter.  

The Cardinals wouldn't go quietly, mounting a five play, 73 yard drive to trim the Hawks lead to 21-14.  

QU answered right back with their second touchdown in as many series when Bobo rushed for his second touchdown of the game.  

William Jewell scored again to cut the lead to 28-21 with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter. 

Andrew Rund was intercepted on the next Hawks possession.  This time the interception was deep inside Hawk territory, giving the Cardinals prime field position at the QU 22.  

The Hawks managed to hold the Cardinals to a field goal and maintained a 28-24 lead. 

A second straight turnover by the Hawks, this time a fumble by Dominique Bobo at the Hawks 44, gave the Cardinals their second possession inside Hawk territory in the third quarter.  

The Cardinals took advantage, scoring on a three yard rush by Trejuan Mask to take a 31-28 lead with 13:30 remaining in the game.  

QU was forced into another three and out and was force to punt again.  

William Jewell scored on their third straight possession to extend their lead to 38-28.  

QU, looking to answer, took to the air.  Rund completed a pass to Owen Schoenenberger at the QU 17.  Schoenenberger was stood up by the Cardinal defense and had the ball striped away by Quayde Bauman.  The Cardinals recovered the fumble at the QU 17.  

Four plays later, the Cardinals score to take a 45-28 lead.  

It would be the last score of the game as the Hawks final possession was ended at the William Jewell nine yard line after Rund was sacked.  

Dylan Rosado totaled 224 yards of offense and scored a touchdown.  Andrew Rund threw for 272 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.  Kody Wood hauled in seven catches for 121 yards and a score.  

Cody Leonard lead the defensive attack with 11 tackles.  

The Hawks travel to Indianapolis next Saturday (Hawktober 14) to take on the nationally ranked Greyhounds.
