QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's soccer team lost to Maryville University 1-0 Sunday afternoon. It was the first loss of the season for the Hawks as the fall to 6-1, 4-1 in the GLVC.
The Hawks had several early chances in the first half to put a goal on the scoreboard. Freshman
Riley Hayes (St. Louis, MO / Incarnate Word) had her shot turned away by Alison Riddle in the 10th minute of action. Just over a minute later, Maddy Kuhlenberg (St. Louis, MO./ Incarnate Word) had her shot saved by Riddle and the Hawks were kept off the board.
It was a quiet first half for both teams on the offensive end as just two shots were taken after Kuhlenberg's shot in the 11th minute of play. Senior Halee Nurnberger tried to put the Hawks on the scoreboard just before the half, but Riddle made her third save to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
Megan Swanson (St. Charles, MO./ St. Dominic) made an save early in the second half to keep the score 0-0. Swanson made another save in the 66th minute to keep the match deadlocked at 0-0.
In the 83rd minute, Mariah Loya got behind the Quincy defense for a breakaway and put her shot into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Saints up 1-0.
The Hawks had one more chance off a corner kick but were unable to tie the score and suffered their first loss of the season.
QU will travel to Lewis University for a neutral site game against nationally ranked Grand Valley State University Wednesday (Sept. 27) for the next match up.
