QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team fell to Maryville University 2-1 Sunday afternoon (Sept. 24).  

The Saints got on the board quickly with a goal in the 15th minute.  JD Sohn found the back of the net off a pass on a breakaway from Helgi Jonsson and the Saints lead 1-0.  

The Hawks had a chance to tie the game in the 33rd minute when Aubrey Ries (Quincy, IL./ Quincy Notre Dame) connected with a header but was turned away by Saints goalkeeper Christi Kjaersgaard.  

QU and Maryville would head into the half with the score reading 1-0 in favor of Maryville. 

Nate Griffin (St. Louis, MO./ CBC) kept the score 1-0 after a save in the 47th minute.  

Aubrey Reis had another header turned away by Kjaersgaard in his second scoring oppurtunity.  

The Saints added to their lead in the 62nd minute.  Off a free kick by Gavino Carranza, a header by Erik Schafer found the back of the net to put Maryville up 2-0.  

Seven minutes later, a foul inside the box allowed for a QU penalty kick.  Aubrey Reis scored on his attempt and cut the lead to 2-1.

The Hawks had several more chances to score but were unable to tie the match.  The final opportunity came on a corner kick  in the 87th minute but QU couldn't extend the match.  

The Hawks managed just four shots on goal.  Nate Griffin made five saves in the match.  

QU returns home to Legends Stadium, Friday September 29th at 7:30 p.m. for their next match against UMSL.
