QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team defeated William Jewell 3-1 for their first GLVC win of the season.
The Hawks lost the first set 27-25. QU tied the score at 25-25 before William Jewell used a pair of kills by Paige Cunningham and Grace Miller to win the first set.
QU responded by winning the next set 26-24. It was a tight game throughout the second set. Neither team lead by more that 3 points.
Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, AZ./Sandra Day O'Connor) lead the Hawks with four kills in the set. With the score tied at 24,
Bekah Raebel (Waterford, WI/Waterford Union) notched her third kill of the set to give the Hawks a 25-24 lead. An attack error by Paige Cunningham gave the Hawks a 26-24 set win.
The third set remained close again. The largest lead of the set fell to William Jewell with a 16-11 lead. The Hawks used a three point run to trim the Cardinals lead to 16-14.
The Hawks trailed 19-17 when QU used another three point run to take a 20-19 lead on a kill by
Lauren Nadler (Charleston, IL/Charleston). William Jewell managed to retake the lead 23-22 late in the third set. The Hawks used their third three point run of the set to win 25-23.
QU set the tone early in the fourth set, taking the first six points. William Jewell made an adjustment, taking six of the next seven points to trim the Hawks lead to 7-6. A pair of
Taylor King (Chelsea, MI./Chelsea) kills and an attack error gave the Hawks a 10-6 lead. QU remained in control for remainder of the match and took the fourth set 25-18.
Bekah Raebel and
Taylor McMonagle lead the Hawks with 14 kills, and
Jessica Licurgo also added 13 kills for the Hawks. McMonagle also added 14 digs in her second straight double-double effort.
The Hawks are now 2-10 on the season and 1-3 in the GLVC. The Hawks return home on Tuesday (Sept 26) to take on UMSL at Pepsi Arena at 7:00 p.m.
