Women's Soccer Improves To 2-0

QUINCY, Ill. -  The Quincy University women's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season after a two goal victory over Ashland University Saturday (Sept. 2).  The Hawks completed a perfect road trip behind goals by senior Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, MO / St. Dominic) and sophomore Alex Severino (St. Louis, MO / Ursuline).

QU got off to a quick start offensively, tallying six shots and three on goal in the first 22 minutes.

The Hawks notched their first goal of the game at the 25 minute mark.  A foul was called just outside of the box and Mackenzie Rief stepped up to take the free kick.  Rief buried her shot over the wall and just beyond the outstretched hands of the Ashland goalie to put the Hawks up 1-0.

The Quincy offense kept up the intensity but were unable to find the back of the net in the remainder of the first half.

At the 57 minute mark in the second half Abby Pulliam made a run down the left side of the field and into the corner.  Pulliam found Alex Severino at the top of the box and Severino chipped her shot over the goalie to put the Hawks up 2-0.

The Quincy defense held firm and the Hawks were able to hold the two goal lead for the remainder of the game.  Senior goalkeeper Megan Swanson (St. Charles, MO / St. Dominic) was tested three times, making all three saves, as she picked up the shutout.

The Hawks outshot the Eagles 17-5, with nine shots of goal for the Hawks and three for the Eagles.

With back to back shutouts, Swanson now has 25 shutouts in her career.

QU will be back in action Friday (Sept. 8) against Truman State in the first GLVC matchup of the season.
