Hawks Salvage Final Game Against William Jewell

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team salvaged the final game of a four-game series against William Jewell, beating the Cardinals, 7-2, after falling in the opener of a doubleheader, 8-3, on Saturday (May 6) at QU Stadium.

The twinbill concluded the regular season and left the Hawks (28-20, 17-10 GLVC) behind Drury (18-8 GLVC) by 1.5 games. The Hawks will win the GLVC West title only with a pair of Drury losses to the Tritons on Sunday. The Panthers won twice on Saturday.

The Hawks got an outstanding start from freshman left-hander Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) in Saturday's finale as Quincy gained a 6-0 lead in the third inning and never looked back.

Seniors Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) and Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) delivered RBI singles before junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) walloped a three-run homer to push the lead to 5-0. It was Wehde's 11th homer of the season. Junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) capped the inning with his ninth home run – a solo shot.

Martin was cruising, retiring 11 in a row at one point from the first to the fifth innings. Tanner Foerschler led off the fifth with a single, but was thrown out on a strike out-throw out double play.

Jewell scored its only run of the game in the sixth, but senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) got it back in the bottom half on his 17th home run of the year.

Martin (5-3) earned the win, giving up just one run on five hits in six innings. He struck out four and walked none. Senior Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) tossed two perfect innings of relief with four strikeouts and junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) gave up an unearned run in the ninth. Canyon Mallory (0-3) was saddled with the loss for WJC, allowing six runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Sophomore Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) was the only QU player with two hits in the game.

In the opener, William Jewell scored three unearned runs off senior lefty Tommy Hager (O'Fallon, Mo.) in the second inning.

QU loaded the bases with no outs in the second, but managed only one run coming on a double play.

The Cardinals blew the game open with four runs in the fourth, two coming on a triple by Drew Standifer.

DeMuri's sac fly in the sixth and an unearned run in the seventh were all the Hawks could muster against William Jewell pitchers Mack Stephenson and Eric Smith.

Hager (1-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked four. Stephenson (4-0) tossed six innings and allowed two runs. Seniors Dalton Doerfler (Pawnee, Ill.) and Nate Perez (Galesburg, Ill.) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

The Cardinals out-hit the Hawks, 11-5.

The Hawks will now await the seedings for the GLVC Tournament, which will begin Thursday (May 11) in Ozark, Mo.
