Hawks Season Ends in Division II World Series

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The 14th-ranked Quincy University baseball team saw its season come to a close, falling to No. 4 UC San Diego, 10-8, in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships on Tuesday (May 30) afternoon at The Ballpark in Grand Prairie.

The Hawks (37-22) lost both games in their first-ever appearance in the World Series after claiming their first Midwest Regional championship.

Quincy went ahead 7-1 in the fourth inning, but the Tritons (41-18) scored six in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game and went on to take the lead for good in the sixth.

After the lineup struggled early against Colorado Mesa on Sunday, the Hawks put up a first-inning run in Tuesday's game against Tritons ace Adrian Orozco, who entered the game with a 9-0 record and a 2.89 ERA. Senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) singled to start the rally and the Hawks loaded the bases on a single by junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) and a hit-by-pitch by sophomore Nolan Snyder (St Louis, Mo.). Walters then came around to score on a passed ball, but sophomore T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) flied out to deep right-center to end the inning.

Head coach Josh Rabe handed the ball to freshman left-hander Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.), who turned in a gutsy two-inning performance, working around traffic in each inning, but surrendered just one run.

The Hawks looked well on their way in the third inning, loading the bases with no outs on three singles by senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.), Walters and DeMuri. Junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) drew an RBI walk and Snyder followed with a two-strike, two-run single to push the lead to 4-1. After a strikeout, a single by sophomore Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) re-loaded the bases and pushed Orozco from the game.

A passed ball allowed Wehde to score and a sac fly by senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) made it 6-1.

Senior Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.) retired the Tritons in order in the third and the Hawks tacked on another run in the fourth on Snyder's RBI groundout to give Quincy a 7-1 lead.

The Tritons responded in the bottom of the fourth as Brandon Shirley's two-run double just went over the third-base bag and Alex Eliopulos's two-run single cut it to 7-5. UCSD tacked on two more on JD Hearn's RBI single and a dying pop-up that rattled out of Walters's glove in short right field.

Preston Mott walked the bases loaded in the fifth and Walters delivered an RBI groundout to give Quincy an 8-7 lead, but the Hawks stranded two runners in scoring position.

The Tritons took their first lead in the sixth as a QU error gave them an extra out and J.T. Williams and Michael Palos capitalized with run-scoring hits.

The Hawks got one on in the eighth inning and the Tritons added an insurance run in the bottom of eighth on a sac fly.

Kyle Goodbrand walked Snyder and Klages in the ninth, but a pop fly to right by junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) ended the game.

Walters led the offense, going 3-for-5 with three singles and three runs. Snyder went 1-for-3 with a walk, hit-by-pitch and three RBI.

Senior Tommy Hager (O'Fallon, Mo.) suffered the loss (1-3), despite allowing two unearned runs. Mott (8-4) earned the win and Goodbrand picked up his third save.

The Hawks have now qualified for three straight NCAA Tournaments and have averaged 38.7 wins in those seasons. They also won the third GLVC championship in program history.
