Spraker Dominant As Hawks Trounce UIS in GLVC Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team got an outstanding start from senior Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.) and the offense roped six extra-base hits as the Hawks pounded Illinois Springfield, 10-1, in the first game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday (May 11) at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo.

The Hawks (29-20) staked Spraker to an early lead with five runs in the first two innings and the right-hander did the rest.

After retiring the Prairie Stars (31-20) in order in the first, Spraker pitched around a leadoff single in the second. He would then retire the next 12 batters before John Sechen reached on an infield single to start the sixth.

After Spraker hit the next batter, he forced leadoff batter James Battley to ground into a 4-6-3 double play before sophomore first baseman T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) speared a grounder down the line to end the inning.

The offense, meanwhile, gave Spraker plenty of support. Senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) tripled to the gap to start the game and scored when junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) reached on an error.

In the second, the Hawks loaded the bases with no outs and junior Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) and Miles followed with consecutive sac flies. Senior Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) then poked a bloop RBI double into right-center, allowing senior David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) to score. The Hawks capped the scoring as DeMuri's grounder to third scooted under the infielder's glove and Walters came around to score.

The Hawks added to their lead in the fifth when DeMuri was hit by a pitch and junior Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) doubled him in with one out.

Quincy blew it open with four runs in the sixth as Martinez and Miles delivered back-to-back RBI doubles and DeMuri slugged a two-run homer to give the Hawks a 10-0 lead. It was DeMuri's 10th home run of the season.

Spraker (6-5) went 7 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out seven. Freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) tossed 1 2/3 hitless innings of relief. UIS starter Adam Gregory (9-3) was tagged with the loss, giving up 10 runs (seven earned) in 5 2/3 innings.

Miles was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Walters went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs, two RBI and two walks. Wehde and Tamaccio also had two hits apiece while DeMuri drove in three runs.

The Hawks will play again Friday (May 12) at 7:30 p.m. at U.S. Baseball Park against the winner of today's Southern Indiana-William Jewell matchup.
