Greene Homers Twice In Doubleheader Defeat

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team lost a pair of games to visiting Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday (April 9), 8-3 and 12-2, at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

The Hawks (12-20, 6-12 GLVC) out-hit the Tritons (28-12, 10-6 GLVC) by an 11-8 margin in the opener, but left seven runners on base in the game.

Missouri-St. Louis opened the game with three runs in the top of the first on a three-run homer by Serena Olson.

Senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) answered in the bottom half, following a single by junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) with a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) led off the second with a double before scoring on an RBI double by junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE) that tied the game at 3.

The Tritons took the lead in the third on a sac fly and scored another run in the fifth before breaking it open on Sara Kern's three-run homer in the seventh.

The Hawks had a chance to get on the board in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but consecutive strikeouts by reliever Carly Kingery stopped the rally.

CoCo Caraway (6-2) earned the win, allowing three runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings. She struck out two and did not have a walk. Kingery had her first save with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Junior Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) took the loss (2-5), giving up eight runs – five earned – on eight hits in seven innings. She struck out four and walked four.

Greene and senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) had two hits each to lead the offense.

Greene continued her hot streak in Game 2 by hitting her second two-run homer of the day in the first inning of the finale. It was her 10th homer of the season to give Quincy a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks would manage only three hits the rest of the way – two coming in the third inning as they left the bases full with one out.

Kern and Ryan Logan homered for the Tritons, who had 14 hits in the game.

Senior Samantha Goble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mt. Pleasant) led the offense by reaching base three times, going 2-for-2 with a walk.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) took the loss (8-9), giving up seven runs – six earned – on nine hits in five innings. She struck out three and walked one. Kingery (6-3) earned the win with a complete game.

The Hawks will return to the diamond on Friday (April 14) at noon when they take on Rockhurst at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
