Rockhurst Picks Up Two Wins Over Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of games to visiting Rockhurst by scores of 6-1 and 7-2 on Friday (April 14) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
 
Quincy (12-22, 6-14 GLVC) fell behind early to Rockhurst (26-16, 15-3 GLVC), which scored an unearned run in the top of the first of Game 1 off QU starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.). QU was hurt by six errors on the day, leading to three unearned runs.
 
Quirk kept Rockhurst off the board in the next four innings, but the visitors struck for five in the sixth inning, getting two two-run homers by Lauren Cairo and Kelsey Tepen.
 
Quincy scored its only run in the sixth as sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) singled, went to second on an error, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC).
 
Quirk (2-6) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits. She walked three and struck out five. Shannon Greene (7-10) earned the win for Rockhurst, surrendering just one run on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
 
Jones was the only QU player with two hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI as Quincy scattered six singles.
 
In Game 2, Rockhurst plated a run in the first and four in the second inning as Cairo slammed another two-run homer in the second inning.
 
Trailing 5-0, Quincy got on the board in the fourth on a solo home run by senior Samantha Goble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mt. Pleasant). QU cut it to 5-2 in the fifth on Jones's RBI single to score pinch-runner Krista Reese (O'Fallon, Mo./Living Word Christian).
 
Lexie Zuniga got both runs back for Rockhurst with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
 
Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) took the loss (8-10), giving up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits. She walked five and struck out one. Bridgette Sappington (18-4) allowed two runs on five hits to pick up the win.
 
Goble was the only Quincy player to reach base twice, going 1-for-2 with a homer and a walk.
 
Quincy is back in action on Saturday (April 15) at noon against William Jewell at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
