Hawks Drop Two On Saturday To Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team dropped a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games on Saturday (April 8), falling to Maryville 5-2 and 4-2, at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

Both teams wore special uniforms pink uniforms adorned with symbols for #FaithFightFrost in support of UIndy head softball coach Missy Frost, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in November and began chemotherapy treatments in February. They joined 42 other teams from around the country in the event which raised awareness and funds for Coach Frost.

On the field, the Saints (17-19, 7-9 GLVC) took an early lead in Game 1 by scratching out an unearned run off QU starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.).

The Hawks (12-18, 6-10 GLVC) stranded a pair in the first before Quirk held the Saints hitless over the next three innings.

Quincy took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as two runs came around to score on an RBI single by sophomore Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.).

The lead did not last long as Maryville touched up Quirk for three runs in the fifth, all scoring on a bases-clearing double by Samantha Hausl. Maryville added an insurance run in the seventh.

Quirk (2-4) suffered the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits. She walked six and struck out two. Nikki Taylor (10-9) picked up the win by allowing just two runs – one earned – on six hits. She walked two and struck out two.

Sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) was the only QU player with two hits while junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE) also reached twice on a hit and a walk.

The Saints, aided by two Quincy errors, took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of Saturday's finale off Quincy starter Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg).

Powers' RBI double in the first cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Hawks left two runners stranded in scoring position with only one out.

Casey Ward's solo homer in the third got the run back for Maryville, making it 4-1.

Sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) capped the scoring by leading off the fourth inning with a home run – her second of the year.

Griskell (8-8) took the loss, despite allowing just one earned run in a complete game effort. She struck out one and walked two. Alyssa Callans (4-3) earned the win with six strikeouts and no walks in five innings while Sheridon Sprague earned her first save.

Junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) led the Hawks with a pair of hits while Walsh walked in addition to her home run.

The Hawks will return to the field on Sunday (April 9) when they take on Missouri-St. Louis in a noon doubleheader at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
