Hawks Earn Split With #5 Southern Indiana

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team bounced back from a heartbreaking 8-7 loss in extra innings in Game 1 to rally for a 4-1 win in Game 2 of a doubleheader at No. 5 Southern Indiana on Monday (April 24) afternoon in Evansville.

The Hawks (16-26, 8-18 GLVC) did not trail in the opener until Mena Fulton's walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth, but Quincy got an outstanding pitching performance in the finale from junior Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) to earn the split.

Southern Indiana (40-10, 19-7 GLVC) opened Game 2 with a run coming on Haley Hodges's sac fly in the first inning. Quirk cruised from that point, not allowing another hit until a two-out infield single in the fifth.

The Hawks took the lead in the fifth as junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) singled and error put two runners in scoring position for junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE), who laced a two-run single to right that gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

Quincy tacked on two more runs in the sixth off USI starter Courtney Atkisson. Singles by senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) and junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) put two runners on for sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry), who ripped a two-run double into the gap.

Quirk (4-8) pitched around a leadoff walk in the sixth and retired the Screaming Eagles in oorder in the seventh to secure the win. She allowed just one run on three hits, while walking two and striking out one in a complete game. Quirk needed just 86 pitches. Atkisson (10-6) suffered the loss for USI.

Jones went 2-for-3 with a run scored as the only QU player with multiple hits. The Hawks out-hit the Screaming Eagles, 7-3.

The defeat in Game 1 came in devastating fashion as the Hawks carried a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Eagles scored six times in the seventh to tie the game before Fulton's RBI single in the ninth won it for the hosts.

Senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) opened the scoring in the first with a two-run homer – her 12th of the season to give QU a 2-0 lead.

USI answered back with one in the bottom half before a two-run double by freshman Kay Bettendorf (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) stretched the lead to 4-1 in the second inning.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) kept the Eagles in check over the next five innings, retiring nine in a row at one point.

Jones powered a two-run home run in the fourth inning – her first of the season – to make it 6-1. An RBI single by junior Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) in the seventh added another insurance run for Quincy.

In the bottom of the seventh, a two-run home run by Hodges capped the six-run inning and tied the game at 7. The Hawks went quietly in the next two innings.

Griskell (10-12) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in 8 1/3 innings. She walked one and struck out one. Quincy ran Jennifer Leonhardt (17-3) from the game after one-plus innings, but Caitlyn Bradley (7-3) earned the win for the Screaming Eagles, giving up three runs in eight relief innings.

Every QU starter had a hit in the game as the Hawks out-hit the Screaming Eagles, 15-12.

The Hawks will now return to the Mart Heinen Softball Complex for the final weekend of the regular season. QU will welcome Indianapolis on Saturday (April 29) at noon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
