Hawks Hit Back-To-Back-To-Back Homers in Split With Indy

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team rode three straight solo homers in the first inning of Game 1 on their way to a doubleheader split with visiting Indianapolis on Friday (April 28) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex. The Hawks won the opener, 3-2, before the Greyhounds took the finale, 8-2.

The Hawks (17-27, 9-19 GLVC), playing in their penultimate doubleheader of the season, hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning of the opener – all from seniors. Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) started the streak with a blast to straightaway center for her third homer of the year.

Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) followed it up by hitting a 3-1 pitch out to right-center to make it 2-0. She is now just two homers shy of QU's single-season record with 13. Samantha Goble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mt. Pleasant) then roped a 3-2 pitch to the opposite field for her third home run of the season.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) was in control of the Greyhounds (33-19, 14-14 GLVC) from the outset, keeping the visitors off the board until the sixth when they plated two runs on Natalie Lalich's homer.

After the homer, Griskell (11-12) retired the last six batters to end the game. She earned the win for Quincy, giving up two runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts in a complete game. Lauren Honkomp (22-10) took the loss for UIndy, allowing three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

Jones led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a double and a homer. Goble also went 2-for-3.

In the nightcap, UIndy took an early lead off QU starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.). The Greyhounds started the game with a walk, single and double to go up 1-0, but Quirk battled and got three straight popouts to strand two runners in scoring position.

Quirk kept the 'Hounds off the board in the second and third innings before the Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Goble, who smacked a two-out, two-run single to center field.

A Quincy error led to two unearned runs for the Greyhounds in the sixth to give the lead back to the visitors, 3-2. Cathy Skaggs' RBI groundout plated Dani Turner for the go-ahead run.

The Hawks looked to rally in the bottom of the inning, putting runners at first and second with two outs, but Honkomp came on in relief of Crystal Sicard and induced an inning-ending groundout.

The Greyhounds blew it open with five runs in the seventh with four coming on Lalich's grand slam.

Quirk (4-9) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits. She walked two and struck out four in seven innings. Sicard (11-7) earned the win, giving up two runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Honkomp earned her third save.

Sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) was the only QU player with two hits in the game as UIndy out-hit Quincy, 11-6.

The Hawks will return to the field on Sunday (April 30) for Senior Day. They will take on Saint Joseph's at noon.
