Hawks Fall Short In Comeback Bid at Bellarmine

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team scored five unanswered runs, but the Hawks' comeback bid came up just short in the second game of a doubleheader that Bellarmine swept on Sunday (April 23) afternoon at Knights Field in Louisville, Ky. The Knights won the opener 8-5 and held on for a 7-6 win in the finale.

The Hawks (15-25, 7-17 GLVC) out-hit the Knights (23-25, 11-13 GLVC) in both games and finished with 27 base-knocks, but they fell behind early in both games and were never able to grab the lead.

Bellarmine held a 5-0 lead through three innings in the opener before the Hawks got back in the game with a four-run third inning. Sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) accounted for three of those on her third home run of the season as she plated senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) and junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC), who each started the inning with singles.

Two more singles by junior Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and freshman Kay Bettendorf (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) led to an RBI double by sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) to make it 5-4.

The Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a home run by Erica Knollman.

Greene hit a solo blast – her 11th homer of the season – in the fifth, but the Hawks wound up leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings, squandering golden opportunities to put up more runs.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) suffered the loss (10-11), allowing eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits in six innings. She gave up four walks and struck out three. Sabrina Fusseneggar (14-11) earned the win and Marlee Tevis nabbed her first save.

Farbak and Greene had three hits apiece to lead Quincy's offense. Farbak is now batting .417 on the season.

In Game 2, the Knights staked themselves to a 4-0 lead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the second off starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.).

Quincy got on the board in the third when Farbak singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, but the Knights made it 7-1 in the fourth inning.

A two-run single by Schwartz cut the deficit to 7-3 in the fifth inning. Quirk then set the Knights down on just seven pitches in the bottom half to get the Hawks offense back to the plate.

Bettendorf's RBI single made it 7-4 before a two-run single by senior Samantha Goble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mt. Pleasant) cut the deficit to one run, 7-6. The Hawks still had runners on the corners with one out, but Fussenegger induced a fly out and got a strike out to end the inning.

The Hawks went in order in the seventh to let Fussenegger record her second save. Tevis (5-8) picked up the win and Quirk (3-8) suffered the loss. Quirk gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits. She walked two and struck out three.

Farbak had another three-hit game and scored twice. Greene, Schwartz and senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) had two hits apiece.

The Hawks will complete their weekend on Monday (April 24) at 11 a.m. when they take on No. 5 Southern Indiana in Evansville.
