Hawks Slug Their Way To Midweek Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team scored 17 runs on 28 hits and got a couple of strong pitching performances to sweep nonconference foe Lincoln, 5-0 and 12-5, on Wednesday (April 19) afternoon in Jefferson City, Mo.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) tossed a three-hit shutout in the opening game to set the tone for the afternoon. She retired the first seven batters she faced until an error with one out in the third generated the first baserunner for the Blue Tigers (5-43). She gave up a single two batters later, but got strikeout to end the inning.

The Hawks (15-23) took the lead with four runs on six hits in the fifth inning. Junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) started the frame with a bunt single and wound up scoring on errors by the first baseman and right fielder on the play.

Sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) plated pinch runner Krista Reese (O'Fallon, Mo./Living Word Christian) with an RBI single later in the inning and senior Samantha Goble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mt. Pleasant) added a two-run single to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.

Griskell finished the game like she started it by retiring the last eight batters she faced.

The Hawks' final run came on an RBI double by senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.).

Griskell (10-10) earned her second straight win with her first shutout of the season. She allowed just three hits and struck out five. Madison Ragar (3-17) gave up five runs on 13 hits in the defeat.

Farbak, Goble, senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) and junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) all had two hits apiece for Quincy.

The Hawks started Game 2 with a couple unearned runs in the first inning as Farbak singled and went to third when Jones reached on a fielding error. The pair then executed a double steal with Farbak scoring the first run. Jones would score on Greene's sac fly.

The Blue Tigers took their first lead of the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the second off QU starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.). Tori Nienhueser had a two-run double in the inning.

QU regained the lead in the third as Goble singled and scored on a triple by sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry). Burton's RBI groundout pushed the Hawks ahead, 4-3.

Goble hit a sac fly in the fourth and Jones tacked on an RBI single in the fifth to stretch the lead to 6-3.

The Hawks removed all doubt in the sixth inning by plating six runs. Walsh delivered a sac fly before an RBI hit by junior Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg). Jones and Greene each added two-run singles in the inning to blow it open, 12-3.

Quirk (3-7) earned the win, giving up five runs on nine hits in a complete game. She walked seven hitters and did not have a strikeout. Sarah Westhoff (2-17) took the loss for Lincoln, giving up 12 runs (five earned) on 15 hits.

Farbak and Goble had three hits apiece while Jones and Greene each drove in three runs. Walsh was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

The Hawks will return to the field on Saturday (April 22) when they travel to Evansville to battle No. 5 Southern Indiana. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
