Eckerd Takes Pair Of Two-Run Games From Hawks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team took a one-day break from the NTC Spring Games in Clermont to head over to St. Petersburg, Fla. for a doubleheader at Eckerd where the Tritons claimed a pair of two-run victories, 4-2 and 5-3, on Wednesday (March 8) evening.

In Game 1, the Hawks (1-5) got a solid pitching performance from junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) as she allowed just three earned runs in a complete game.

The Tritons (11-15) got on the board in the first inning as Kayleigh Floyd singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Chelsea Armstrong's sacrifice fly.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the second. Junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) doubled and went to third on a single by junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE). Sophomore Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.) followed with an RBI single to tie the game.

Junior Geri Westerhoff (Minooka, Ill.) followed with a one-out walk to load the bases. With two down, sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) delivered an RBI single to give the Hawks a one-run lead.

Griskell held that lead until the fifth when the Tritons tacked on two runs on two hits with the help of a Quincy error. Eckerd added an insurance run in the sixth before the Hawks stranded a pair in scoring position as they tried to tie the game in the seventh.

Burton went 2-for-3 in the game while Powers also reached base twice, going 1-for-2 with a walk. The Tritons stole five bases against the Hawks.

Griskell (1-1) was charged with the loss while Janna Gaburo (2-2) picked up the win. Nikole Van Gennep earned her first save of the season.

In the nightcap, the Hawks got on the board in the top of the first as Farbak singled, stole second and scored on a double by senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.).

The Tritons plated two runs in the bottom of the first – both coming on wild pitches.

Quincy regained the lead with two runs in the top of the second. Freshman Kay Bettendorf (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) singled and scored on a triple by senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC), who would later score on a run-scoring groundout by sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry).

Senior reliever Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) held that score until the fifth when the Tritons scored three times to take a 5-3 lead.

The Hawks rallied in the sixth, but left the bases loaded and Van Gennep pitched around a one-out single in the seventh.

Farbak went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the Hawks' offense. Harbison was saddled with the loss, tossing 5 2/3 innings of relief, walking five and striking out five.

The Hawks are off on Thursday and will return to the field on Friday (March 10) for games against Walsh and Trevecca Nazarene in Clermont, Fla.
