Hawks Take Down Wildcats in Four Sets at Pepsi Arena

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team exacted a measure of revenge against Culver-Stockton, avenging a loss last week by beating the Wildcats, 25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, at Pepsi Arena on Tuesday (March 28) night.

Last Thursday, the Wildcats (12-18) took a three-set match from the Hawks (6-18), who snapped a four-match losing skid Tuesday night.

Outside of a rough second set, the Hawks held Culver-Stockton to a .062 hitting percentage over Sets 1, 3 and 4.

Culver led Set 1 by an 11-7 count before the Hawks rallied to score 10 of the next 11 points to take command. Junior Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward) put down the final kill in the frame.

The Wildcats committed just one error and hit .625 in the second set to cruise to the victory. After the intermission, the Hawks scored the first three points and never trailed in the third set. It was tied at 18, but Quincy went on a 5-1 run to take a 23-19 lead after a kill by freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy). Consecutive kills by senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) handed the win to the Hawks.

Set 4 went back-and-forth as the game saw 11 tie scores and eight lead changes. Trailing 15-14, the Hawks took control with a 9-2 run that pushed them ahead 23-17. The Wildcats rallied to get it to 24-21, but a block by Kelso and Winter put the match away.

Wheeler led three players in double figures with 15 kills (.276) with sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) adding 14 kills (.125) and Kelso chipping in 11 kills (.350). Winter just missed double digits with nine kills (.208).

Sophomore Kolbie Knorr (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) was terrific on the back row, coming up with a QU season-high 20 digs.

Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had 40 assists and four kills (.800).

Ammuniki Wood led the Wildcats with 12 kills (.450).
