Hawks Pick Up Split With Extra Innings Win at McKendree

QUINCY, Ill. – For the second straight time, the Quincy University softball team used extra innings to earn a Great Lakes Valley Conference split, this time with host McKendree on Sunday (March 26) afternoon in Lebanon, Ill. The Bearcats won the first game, 14-5, but Quincy rallied for three in the ninth to beat McKendree, 4-1, in the nightcap.

The Hawks (10-12, 4-4 GLVC) have now split their last five doubleheaders, including all four of their conference twinbills.

Quincy got an excellent start from junior right-hander Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) in the finale. She tossed a complete game, scattering eight hits and allowing just an unearned run while walking one and striking out six.

McKendree's lone run came in the first inning as Jamie Doggendorf singled, went to second on an error, scooted to third on a sac bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

The Bearcats held their 1-0 lead until the fifth when junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE) singled and went to second on a sac bunt. With two outs, senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) delivered an RBI single, allowing pinch-runner Krista Reese (O'Fallon, Mo./Living Word Christian) to score.

Griskell gave up a hit in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, including a leadoff double in the eighth, but escaped each time to keep the game knotted at 1.

The Hawks loaded the bases with one out in the ninth for freshman Kay Bettendorf (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South), who moved everyone up with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Jones followed with a two-run double to the alley in right-center to make it 4-1.

Griskell (7-5) gave up a leadoff single in the ninth, but got a groundout and a pair of strikeouts to end the game. She earned her seventh win of the season.

Jones and Bettendorf had two hits apiece with Jones driving in three runs.

McKendree (17-12, 4-4 GLVC) led 6-0 after two innings of the opener before the Hawks rallied for three runs in the third with RBIs coming from Jones, freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) and Poore.

The Bearcats tacked on two more in the third and three in the fourth to take an 11-3 lead into the fifth when senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) socked a two-run homer to cut into the deficit. It was her sixth home run of the season.

McKendree scored a single run in the fifth and a two-run homer by Dani Schoenbacher ended the game in the sixth.

Sophomore Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing three earned runs in the start. Holly Magre (10-5) earned the win for McKendree.

Sophomore Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.) was the only QU player with two hits in the game while Greene also reached twice, going 1-for-2 with a homer and a walk.

The Hawks will return to the field next Saturday (April 1) for a GLVC twinbill at Missouri S&T. First pitch is scheduled for noon in Rolla.
