Big Inning Lifts Hawks To Midweek Split

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team split a nonconference doubleheader against visiting Missouri Baptist, losing Game 1, 3-1, before picking up an 11-4 win in Game 2, on Wednesday (March 22) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

After mustering just four hits in the opener, and then four hits through the first five innings of the second game, the Hawks (8-10) exploded for an eight-run, eight-hit sixth inning to turn a 4-3 deficit into an 11-4 lead in the nightcap.

Senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) tied the game at 2 with a two-run homer in the first inning and an RBI double by senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) in the third tied the game at 3.

The Spartans (10-10) took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the sixth before the Hawks' offensive explosion.

Two runs scored on a hard-hit fly ball to center by freshman Megan Sharpshair (Canton, Ill.) that was dropped by the defender to give QU a 5-4 lead. Senior Samantha Goble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mt. Pleasant) followed that up with a three-run homer to straightaway center field to push the lead to 8-4.

The Hawks continued the rally with two outs as Jones singled and scored on Greene's RBI double off the wall in left. Sophomores Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.) and Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) followed with their own RBI doubles to stretch it to the closing margin, 11-4.

Sophomore left-hander Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) earned her first win of the season, tossing a complete game. She gave up four runs – three earned – on just two hits. She walked 10 and struck out two. Delissa Dennison (2-6) took the loss for the Spartans.

Greene went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double, two runs and three RBI. Jones, Powers, Walsh and Goble also had two hits apiece.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) surrendered three runs on four hits in the first inning of the opener and that was enough for MBU starter Andrea Chessor.

Griskell held the Spartans to just two hits the rest of the game, but the Hawks were not able to get their lineup going as Chessor scattered just four hits.

Quincy's lone run came in the seventh as Walsh led off with a triple down the right field line and scored on Powers' RBI groundout.

Griskell (5-5) was saddled with the loss, giving up just three runs on six hits over the complete game. She struck out a season-high seven batters and walked three. Chessor (8-4) picked up the win, giving up one run on four hits in seven innings.

Walsh was the lone Hawk to reach base twice, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a triple.

The Hawks will resume GLVC action on Friday (March 24) with a doubleheader at Illinois Springfield scheduled for 2 p.m. The twinbill was moved up from Saturday because of inclement weather in the forecast.
