Hawks Win In Extras To Earn GLVC Split

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team lost in walk-off fashion in its doubleheader opener at Illinois Springfield, 5-4, but the Hawks bounced back for an extra-innings, 8-4 win over the Prairie Stars in Game 2 on Friday (March 24) afternoon in Springfield, Ill.

The Prairie Stars (15-14, 2-4 GLVC) opened the scoring of Game 2 with three runs in the third off QU starter Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg).

In the top of the fourth, the Hawks (9-11, 3-3 GLVC) cut into the deficit as junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE) ripped a two-run double that scored sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) and senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.), who both reached with singles.

UIS made it 4-2 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hawks tied the game in the sixth as junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) had an RBI groundout before sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) had a run-scoring infield single.

Griskell pitched around a triple and a walk in the sixth and a one-out single in the seventh to keep the Stars off the board.

In the top of the eighth, the Hawks loaded the bases with one out on two singles and an error. After a strikeout, sophomore Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.) came up with a clutch two-run single down the right field line to break the tie. Freshman Kay Bettendorf (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) followed with her own two-run single to break it open at 8-4.

Griskell gave up a two-out triple in the eighth, but preserved the win for the Hawks, who have split their last four doubleheaders.

Griskell (6-5) earned the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits in eight innings. She walked one and struck out six. Farbk was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.

Jaycee Craver took the loss for the Prairie Stars.

In the first game, the Hawks opened the scoring with a run in the first as senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) doubled and scored on Greene's RBI single to center.

The Prairie Stars plated three in the third off QU starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.). They added a single run in the fourth to make it 4-1.

The Hawks tied the game in the fifth on a couple home runs. Junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) led off the inning with a first-pitch homer to make it 4-2, and with two outs, Greene powered a 1-2 pitch to center for a two-run shot, tying the game.

The game remained tied at 4-4 until the seventh when Quirk gave up three straight two-out walks before a hit by pitch won the game for Illinois Springfield.

Quirk (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in 6 2/3 innings. She gave up five hits and six walks and struck out seven. Craver (4-6) earned the win in relief.

Greene went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI while Jones was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

The Hawks will return to action on Sunday (March 26) for a doubleheader at McKendree. First pitch is set for noon.
