Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Brendan Bittner

Hawks Throttle Belmont Abbey In Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. – For the second straight night, the Quincy University men's volleyball team turned in a dominant defensive effort, this time earning a three-set sweep over Belmont Abbey, 25-11, 27-25, 25-23, on Friday (March 17) night in Bristol, Tenn.

The Hawks (5-14) hit .309 as a team and totaled 9.5 blocks while holding the Crusaders (4-14) to a .041 mark.

Quincy led from the start, opening first set on an 8-1 run. The Hawks held Belmont Abbey to 12 errors, five kills and a minus-.292 hitting percentage in the opening frame.

The Crusaders matched up better in the second set, but the Hawks fought off two set points before two kills by junior Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward) and a final kill by junior Shane McAdams (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge/San Diego City) put an exclamation point on the middle set.

The Hawks opened the third set on a 4-0 run, but trailed as late as 22-21. Quincy then scored three straight – the last point coming on a double block by senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy). The teams then exchanged service errors to give Quincy the match.

Winter led the Hawks with nine kills (.273) while Kelso chipped in with eight kills (.533) and no errors. Senior Kurtwood Greene (Nassau, Bahamas/Mt. Carmel Prep) also did not have an error and had five kills (.500).

The Hawks will return to the floor on Saturday, again in Bristol, at 1 p.m. CT, for a match against host King.
