Lindenwood Takes Pair From Hawks on Thursday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team played its final tune-up before Great Lakes Valley Conference play begins this weekend, falling to Lindenwood, 6-5 and 11-7, on Thursday (March 16) afternoon in St. Charles, Mo.

The Hawks (5-7) had their four-game winning streak snapped, despite scoring 12 runs in the twinbill.

In the opener, Austine Pauley hit a two-run homer to give the Lions (8-8) a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Hawks cut that in half as senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) drew a leadoff walk in the third, stole second and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way).

QU starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) retired Lindenwood in order in the third and pitched around a leadoff single in the fourth to keep the game at 2-1.

The Hawks scored three in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Jones led off with a single and scored on a double by junior Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg), who went to third on the throw home. McLaughlin would score on a wild pitch to give Quincy a 3-2 lead before senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) singled and scored on an RBI hit by junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE).

Kimberly Fozzard's two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at 4-4 and the Lions took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on Pauley's RBI single.

Trailing by a run in the seventh, Farbak reached on an error, advancing to all the way to second to start the inning. She went to third on a groundout and scored on Poore's two-out RBI double to tie the game.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) relieved Quirk in the seventh. With the help of an error, the Lions loaded the bases with one out and Becca Stocker delivered the game-winning base hit.

Quirk did not factor in the decision, allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings. Griskell took the loss. Stormee Galka (5-3) earned the win for Lindenwood, giving up three earned runs in a complete game.

Poore led the Hawks' offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Jones was the only other Hawk to reach base twice.

In the nightcap, the Hawks scored two in the opening frame, as junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) and Farbak executed a double steal to give the Hawks the lead. Sophomore Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.) plated Schwartz with an RBI single to make it 2-0.

The Lions would take the lead in the bottom half of the inning with five runs on five hits off Griskell. Lindenwood added another run in the third inning before Quincy got one back in the fourth on Schwartz's RBI hit.

Lindenwood made it 10-3 with four runs in the fifth and Quincy got two back in the sixth on Powers' bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a bases-loaded walk by sophomore Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood).

Quincy's final two runs came in the seventh on RBI singles by Greene and Powers.

Griskell (4-3) was saddled with the loss while Fozzard (3-5) earned the win. Galka picked up her first save of the season.

Powers reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with a walk, a hit by pitch and three RBI. Schwartz was 3-for-4 with three runs. Burton was 2-for-4 with a walk.

The Hawks will return to the field on Saturday (March 18) for their home opener against Lewis at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex. First pitch is set for noon.
