Hawks Earn Split in GLVC Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team earned a split on the first day of Great Lakes Valley Conference play, defeating Lewis, 2-1, in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday (March 18) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex. The Flyers took Game 1, 8-0.

The Hawks (6-8, 1-1 GLVC) got an outstanding start from junior Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) in Game 2 as she tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits, to pick up her first win of the season.

The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth when the Hawks plated a run as junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE) singled, went to second on a groundout and scored on an RBI single to left by junior Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg).

Sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) doubled the Hawks' lead when she led off the fifth with a solo blast to center field.

Lewis got a run back on a sac fly in the sixth, but Quirk stranded two runners in the top of the seventh to seal the victory. The Flyers (12-7, 1-1 GLVC) left 12 runners on base.

McLaughlin and junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) reached base twice in the game, each going 1-for-2 with a walk.

The Hawks were not able to get their bats going in Game 1, managing five hits in the shutout. Dara Sanders (8-0) remained undefeated for the Flyers, who scored three in the third, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.

The Hawks had their best chance to score in the first inning, loading the bases with no outs, but Sanders escaped by getting a strikeout and to popouts.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) took the loss (4-4), giving up eight runs in five innings.

The Hawks will return to action on Sunday (March 19) for a GLVC doubleheader against UW-Parkside at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
