MOVING ON! Hawks Gut Out 78-75 Win Over KWC

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Quincy University men's basketball team used a big first half run and held on in the waning moments to knock off No. 5 Kentucky Wesleyan, 78-75, and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday (March 11) night at Knights Hall.

The Hawks (25-6) came in as the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Regional and will now play top seed and host Bellarmine on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's win snapped a 26-game winning streak for the Panthers (28-3), who were the region's No. 4 seed.

Quincy led the entire way after taking a 6-5 lead with 14:44 after a 3-pointer by senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) got the Hawks into an offensive rhythm. QU started the game 1-for-7 with three turnovers.

It was the defense that set the tone early for the Hawks as they harassed talented Kentucky Wesleyan guards Ken-Jah Bosley and Jordan Jacks, who came in as the Panthers' leading scorers. Both wound up hitting around their season averages in scoring, but they combined to shoot 11-for-29 (38 percent) with five turnovers.

The Hawks forced the Panthers to miss 13 of their first 15 shots and KWC also committed seven turnovers as QU built a 21-5 lead with an 18-0 run over a six-and-a-half minute stretch.

The Panthers trimmed the lead down to six points later in the first half, but four straight free throws by senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) and sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) gave the Hawks a 33-23 halftime lead.

Hinton came up big in the first half, scoring 10 points while filling in for senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West), who struggled with foul trouble.

The Hawks built their lead to 15 early in the second half, getting a layup from senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis./Kirkwood CC) and a 3-pointer from senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek).

The Panthers slowly crept back into the game as the second half wore on. It was a five-point game, 50-45, with 10 minutes to play, but the Hawks rattled off a 12-4 run to rebuild the lead to 62-49 with 7:05 left on Tagarelli's layup.

Quincy kept the Panthers at arm's reach, but they used a 6-0 run to trim the lead to 70-66 on a dunk by Adam Stanford with 1:48 left.

On QU's next possession, Senor stepped into a three as the shot clock buzzer sounded to push it back to seven before Bosley hit from long range to make it 73-69.

The Hawks committed a turnover on their next trip, but McGaughey got a steal and found Washington in transition who threw down a monster dunk and drew a foul on Bosley to make ti 75-69.

Bosley came down again and hit another 3-pointer to trim it to three points, and after Senor hit his free throws, Bosley knocked down another one to make it 77-75. Tagarelli then hit two free throws before Bosley's 3-pointer at the buzzer clanged off the side of the rim.

Tagarelli led the Hawks with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while shooting 7-for-16 from the field. He also set the school single-season record for scoring with 624 points.

Senor nearly had a double-double with 17 points, nine assists and four rebounds. Hinton finished with 18 and shot 10-for-13 from the line. Washington scored 12 points and Meyer added 10.

The Hawks shot 49 percent (24-for-49) from the field in the game and held the Panthers to 45 percent (27-for-60).

Jacks led the Panthers with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Bosley scored 16 points.

The Hawks will play top-seed and No. 2-ranked Bellarmine at 6:30 p.m. CT at Knights Hall. The game can be watched on the GLVC Sports Network at www.glvcsn.com/bellarmine or the GLVCSN app on most Smart TV platforms.
