Quincy's Season Ends In Second Round of NCAA Tournament

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Quincy University men's basketball team saw its season come to a close in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 93-64 defeat to top seed and No. 2-ranked Bellarmine on Sunday (March 12) night at Knights Hall.

The Hawks (25-7) were playing in their first NCAA Tournament since 2010 and matched the second-highest win total in program history (1981-82).

On Sunday, the Hawks took an early blow from the Knights (30-3), falling behind 15-2 in the first four minutes of the game.

"They were definitely a well-engaged, well-oiled machine tonight," said head coach Marty Bell, who coached in his fifth NCAA Tournament. "They got us out of a rhythm early and we never really recovered from that first blow that we took."

The Hawks chipped away at the lead at that point by getting stops and converting on the offensive end. Junior Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect/Buffalo) hit a 3-pointer before senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West), dealing with foul trouble for the second straight night, scored nine straight points, hitting a three to cut the deficit down to 24-20.

The Hawks forced a turnover on BU's next possession, but Quincy could not capitalize and the Knights scored the next five points to push the lead back to nine. Bellarmine closed the half on a 24-8 run and took a 48-28 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Hawks got after it quickly as McGaughey scored on a transition layup on a slick feed from senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) and then popped a three on the next trip to make it 48-33.

Bellarmine coach Scott Davenport called a timeout to stem the tide and the Knights responded with a 9-0 run that pushed the spread to its largest of the game.

"We established [the opening minutes of the half], but they called a quick timeout, got right back on their feet and just took the game over from there," said McGaughey.

The Hawks had no answer for the Knights' motion offense which shot 55 percent (36-for-66) from the field and hit 10 3-pointers. All-GLVC first team forwards Rusty Troutman and Adam Eberhardt combined for 54 points on 20-for-30 shooting – each scoring 27 points in the game. Bellarmine had only one other player in double figures.

McGaughey paced the Hawks with 19 points, going 7-for-12 from the field and 4-for-7 from the 3-point line. Sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) capped a terrific showing in the tournament with 14 points and eight rebounds. Senor scored five points and handed out eight assists against no turnovers in 35 minutes.

The Hawks, who won the GLVC West Division championship, finished with just seven losses – their fewest since the 1994-95 season.

After the game, Senor described the locker room atmosphere as "tough," but that the team will not let the final game define its season.

"We talked about how it's not about wins and losses, but it's about the journey in life and learning those life lessons," he said.
