Hawks Win Two In-Region Games In Florida

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team banged out a season-high 13 hits in a 10-8 win over Walsh before turning in another solid effort to beat Trevecca Nazarene, 8-4, as the Hawks picked up two in-region wins on Friday (March 10) night at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

In the first game against the Cavaliers, the Hawks (3-5) plated single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-2 lead into the sixth. Senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) had a sac fly in the first inning and homered in the third. Freshman Megan Sharpshair (Canton, Ill.) followed up a triple by sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) with an RBI groundout in the fourth. Greene scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.) in the fifth.

The Cavaliers (6-11) tied the game at 4-4 with a couple runs in the sixth off starter Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.).

The Hawks would break that tie with six runs in the top of the seventh. Walsh and Sharpshair each drew bases-loaded walks and junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) delivered the big blow with a two-run single.

Walsh rallied in the bottom of the inning for four runs, but catcher Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) caught a runner stealing and reliever Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) got Abby Reusser to fly out to end the game.

Harbison (1-3) earned the win, allowing five earned runs in six innings. She struck out six and walked four. Ryan Kuula suffered the loss, giving up six runs in two relief innings.

Six Hawks had multiple hits in the game, led by junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE), who reached base four times by going 2-for-3 with two walks.

In the day's second game, the Hawks fell behind, 2-0, after two innings, but Greene slugged a three-run homer – her third of the season and second of the day – to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead in the third.

Walsh and freshman Kay Bettendorf (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway South) had back-to-back RBI hits in the fourth before Poore homered to start the fifth to give the Hawks a 6-2 lead.

The Trojans (9-11) got a pair of runs back in the sixth, but Burton smacked a two-run homer to give the Hawks their four-run cushion.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) improved to 2-1 by allowing just two earned runs in a complete game effort. She walked two and struck out six.

Sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) and junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) had two hits each to lead the offense.

The Hawks will play their final games in Florida on Saturday (March 11) when they take on Cedarville and Pitt-Johnstown.
