Hawks Finish Florida Trip On Four-Game Winning Streak

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team won two more games on Saturday (March 11) to close its spring break trip to the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. on a four-game winning streak. The Hawks toppled Cedarville, 11-3, in five innings before taking a 5-2 decision against Pitt-Johnstown in the final game.

Sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) gave the Hawks (5-5) a 2-1 lead in the second inning with a two-run single that plated senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) and sophomore Kylie Powers (Oak Forest, Ill.).

The Yellow Jackets (5-10) regained the lead in the top of the third with a pair of runs, but Quincy exploded for eight runs on just four hits and an error in the bottom of the third. Freshman Megan Sharpshair (Canton, Ill.) and senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) each had two-run hits in the inning and junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE) added an RBI double.

Greene's RBI single in the fifth inning ended the game, giving the Hawks an eight-run lead.

Farbak went 3-for-4 with a double two RBI while Greene was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and three RBI.

Junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) earned the win, tossing three shutout innings in relief of sophomore Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.). Griskell allowed just two hits and struck out three with no walks. Morgan Arbogast was tagged with the loss for the Jackets.

In Game 2, Griskell twirled a gem, blanking the Mountain Cats (5-4) over the first six innings of her start. She tossed a complete game, striking out three batters to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) smacked an RBI single in the first inning to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks added four runs in the third inning with the help of two errors. Junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) led off with a triple and scored when Greene reached on an error. Sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) ripped an RBI single and junior Karli McLaughlin (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) tacked on a two-run single to make it 5-0.

Griskell cruised from there before the Mountain Cats posted a pair of runs in the seventh.

Schwartz and McLaughlin led the Hawks with two hits apiece and Burton also reached twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a triple.

The Hawks will now return to Quincy before hitting the road on Tuesday (March 14) for a doubleheader at Lindenwood.
