Hawks Drop Heartbreaker in Five Sets To Mastodons

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker to visiting Fort Wayne, 24-26, 25-19, 26-24, 20-25, 16-14, in MIVA action on Friday (Feb. 24) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (3-11, 1-7 MIVA) won the first set before dropping the next two. QU then forced a fifth set before falling in overtime of the decisive frame. Three of the five games went to extra points.

The fifth set alone saw 10 tie scores and four lead changes as the momentum swung drastically between the two sides.

The Hawks trailed the Mastodons (5-13, 2-5 MIVA), 11-9 in the final frame, but got a kill from freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy) followed by two attacking errors with senior Michael Schreiber (Blue Island, Ill./Marist) on the serve to give the Hawks a 12-11 lead.

After a timeout, sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) put down a kill to push the advantage to 13-11 for Quincy.

Pelegrin Vargas followed with a kill for Fort Wayne and senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard) had a hitting error to tie it at 13-13. The Mastodons then benefited from the Hawks being out of rotation and were awarded a point to give them a 14-13 lead.

Wheeler tied it back up with a kill to stave off match point, but Vargas put down a kill and a QU hitting error gave the 'Dons the victory.

Siebum led the Hawks with 18 kills (.233) while junior Shane McAdams (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge/San Diego City) tacked on a career-high 17 kills (.538) against just three errors. Kelso joined the duo in double figures with 11 kills (.129).

Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) handed out 52 assists and Siebum and sophomore Kolbie Knorr (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) had 11 digs each.

Both teams hit .217 in the match and both finished with 72 points. They were even in blocks, 9-9. QU had a 60-59 lead in kills and the 'Dons had a 4-3 edge in aces.

Vargas led Fort Wayne with 22 kills (.341) while Michael Keegan had 43 assists. Four players had double figures in digs for the Mastodons, led by Scott McNerney's 12.

The Hawks return to the Pepsi Arena floor on Saturday (Feb. 25) at 7 p.m. when they take on No. 12 Ball State.
