How The West Was Won; Hawks Win Division Title

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Quincy University men's basketball team clinched the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division championship with a grueling 97-92 win over Truman State at Pershing Arena.

The Hawks (24-5, 14-4 GLVC) clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's GLVC Tournament by virtue of their division championship, earning a bye and automatic qualification into the quarterfinals in Evansville, Ind. That game will be played March 2 at the Ford Center.

On Thursday, the Hawks and Bulldogs (20-8, 12-6 GLVC) locked in a typical tight battle between schools separated by just 78 miles across the Mississippi River.

The largest lead of the game was 10 points, and that occurred in the first three minutes of the game as the Hawks held 12-2 and 14-4 advantages by hitting their first six shots from the field.

The Bulldogs tightened the game before halftime, keeping their deficit at 47-44 heading into the break.

The second half was a bruising, back-and-forth contest that saw six tie scores and eight lead changes.

Down the stretch, Kyle Kanaskie hit one of his five 3-pointers with 2:41 to play to give the home team a 90-86 lead.

On the other end, sophomore forward Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) knocked down a 3-pointer to trim it back to one.

The Hawks then got a stop and senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.) hit a driving layup with 1:31 left to take a 91-90 lead. After another stop, it was Tagarelli hitting a cutting Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) for another layup that put the Hawks up 93-90 with 48 seconds left.

Cory Myers followed with a bucket for the Bulldogs before Tagarelli hit a pair of clutch free throws with 21 seconds remaining.

The Hawks then got the biggest stop of the game leading by three as Hinton stripped Kanaskie and Tagarelli collected the loose ball and hit two more free throws to seal the victory.

Tagarelli finished with 32 points on 11-for-17 shooting, to go with eight rebounds and three steals. Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) added 17 points, six assists and five rebounds and senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) tacked on 16 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) scored 12 points and Meyer scored 10.

The Hawks shot 65 percent (35-for-54) from the field and knocked down 9-of-19 (47 percent) 3-pointers. The Bulldogs shot 55 percent (30-for-55) from the field and went 10-for-19 (53 percent) from long range.

Kanaskie led six Bulldogs in double figures with 19 points and four assists.
