Hawks Drop Season Opener to Pumas, 7-1

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team opened the 2017 season on Friday (Feb. 17) afternoon, but the Hawks fell to Saint Joseph's, 7-1, at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.

The Pumas (1-0) opened up a 6-0 lead through four innings before the Hawks scored their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth. Junior left fielder J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) singled and went to second on a walk by junior catcher Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.).

Sophomore first baseman T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) followed with a single to score DeMuri, but the Hawks stranded two runners in scoring position to end the threat. The Hawks stranded 12 runners in the game.

Chase Fieldhouse's two-run single off senior right-hander Graham Spraker (Tucson, Ariz.) gave the Pumas an early lead. They added on with a bases-loaded walk in the third, and scored three times in the fourth on Riley Benner's two-run double and a sac fly by Joshua Handzik.

The Hawks (0-1) mustered just four hits in the game, while the Pumas banged out eight. Benner's two doubles were the only extra base hits.

Spraker (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up three runs in three innings, walking four and striking out three. Junior Nick Stroud (Dalton City, Ill.) turned in a solid relief outing, pitching two hitless innings with three strikeouts. Junior Jake Hemphill (St. Louis, Mo.) also tossed an inning of shutout relief.

Tasker Strobel (1-0) earned the win for the Pumas, allowing just one hit over 4 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out six.

The Hawks will return to the field on Saturday (Feb. 18) for a doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan that will start at 11 a.m. in Millington, Tenn.
