QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team defeated the MacMurray Highlanders 88-74 Sunday (Dec 31) afternoon.
The Hawks jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first three minutes of the first half.
QU trailed 11-8 with 15:03 to play in the first half. The Hawks went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead 15-11.
The Hawks pushed the lead to 11 after a Ryan Briscoe three-pointer at the 9:24 mark in the first half.
MacMurray tied the score with 5:04 remaining in the first half on a basket by leading scorer Brent Long. QU held the Highlander's leading scorer to just four points. Long was averaging over 20 points per game this season.
The Hawks took a 41-38 lead into the half.
QU knocked down six three-pointers in the first 20 minutes of play compared to just two for MacMurray.
The Hawks started the second half on an 8-2 run in the first three and half minutes of play.
An 8-0 run by the Highlanders shrunk the Hawks lead to one with 14:45 to play in the second half.
QU was able to push the lead back to five after a three-pointer by Robby Dosier with 12:39 remaining.
With 8:05 to play, the Hawks again held a one-point lead over MacMurray.
A 16-2 run by QU pushed the game out of reach for MacMurray as the Hawks led 79-64 with 4:17 to play.
QU comfortably held on for the 14 point win.
Demetrius Houston led the Hawks with 18 points and three assists. Marsalis Johnson finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Hawks improved to 4-8 on the year and will play the Indianapolis Greyhounds on January 4th in their next GLVC matchup of the season.
