QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team lost its second GLVC matchup to the William Jewell Cardinals 61-54 Saturday afternoon (Dec. 2).
Three-point shooting got QU off to a good start as the Hawks hit three threes in the opening quarter to grab a 12-8 lead. Anika Webster hit a pair of three-pointers to give the Hawks the early advantage.
The Hawks hit a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter and kept up a strong defensive effort to take a 28-20 lead into the half. Webster continued a strong first half scoring a pair of baskets to lead the Hawks with 10 points in the first half.
QU scored the first two baskets of the second half to push its lead to 32-20. The Hawks held a 34-23 lead with 4:43 remaining in the third quarter.
The Cardinals went on an 8-0 run over the next two and a half minutes to trim the lead to 34-31. The Hawks answered by scoring the next five points and pushing their lead back to 39-31.
William Jewell quickly responded by scoring the last five points of the quarter to cut the Hawks lead to 39-36.
After a pair of free throws by the Cardinals cut the lead to just one at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Anika Webster's layup put the Hawks up three with 9:20 to play in the final quarter.
William Jewell scored the next five points to grab a 44-41 lead. After a pair of free throws by Webster and a three-pointer by William Jewell, the Hawks trailed by four with 6:57 to play.
Jessica Merino scored the next five points for the Hawks to put QU back on top with 5:25 to play.
William Jewell took a three-point lead before a Jessie Rabas three-pointer tied the game at 51 with 4:30 remaining.
Another five-point run for William Jewell put the Cardinals up 56-51.
Rabas hit another three to cut the lead to 56-54.
The Cardinals hit five out of six free throws down the stretch to claim the 61-54 victory over the Hawks.
QU falls to 1-5, 0-2 in the GLVC.
The Hawks return home to take on Drury on December 5th in their next matchup of the season.
