QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball fell to the undefeated William Jewell Cardinals 92-81 Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks took an early 4-0 lead as the Hawks and Cardinals provided stout defense through the first three minutes of action.
The Cardinals finally found their rhythm from the field, going on an 11-2 run over the next minute of action.
Robert DeVries tied the score at 11, knocking down a three-pointer with 13:34 remaining in the first half.
The Cardinals responded by scoring the next six points to take a 17-11 lead.
With QU trailing 19-15, the Hawks knocked down a pair of three-pointers to take a 21-19 lead with just over nine minutes to play in the first half.
Another six-point Cardinal run put William Jewell back on top with 7:11 to play.
After a Marcus Hinton layup at the 4:12 mark the Hawks trimmed the lead to 30-29.
A 9-0 run put the Cardinals up 39-29 with 59 seconds remaining in the first half.
Marcus Hinton scored his 14th point in the first half to end the 9-0 run and bring the score to 39-32.
A layup by the Cardinals was the final scoring of the first half and William Jewell took a 41-32 lead into the half.
The Hawks and the Cardinals traded baskets through the first eight minutes of play in the second half.
A layup by Marsalis Johnson brought the Cardinals lead to 52-46 with 13:07 to play in the second half.
William Jewell responded by pushing their lead back to 61-49 with just under eleven and a half minutes to play in the second half.
The Hawks went on a 12-2 run to cut the Cardinals lead to 63-60.
With 4:07 to play, a layup by DeVries brought the score to 72-70. A defensive stop by the Hawks and a three-pointer by Tanner Stuckman put the Hawks on top 73-72.
Marsalis Johnson's dunk pushed the Hawks lead to three with 2:20 remaining.
The Cardinals scored the next five points to put William Jewell up 77-75 with 1:22 to play.
The Hawks sent the game to overtime after a layup by Demetrius Houston with 18 seconds remaining.
William Jewell scored the first nine points of the overtime period to take an 86-77 lead
A three-pointer by Bobby Frasco trimmed the Cardinals lead to 81-89.
The Hawks could bring the lead no closer.
QU was outscored 15-4 in overtime and fell to the Cardinals 92-81.
The Hawks had 5 players score in double figures, led by Marsalis Johnson's 19 points.
Quincy fell to 1-6, 0-2 in GLVC play.
