QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team shot over 53% from the field in QU's 95-55 win over Ohio Valley University Sunday afternoon (Dec. 17).
The Hawks also knocked down 11 three-pointers, six coming from sophomore guard Robert DeVries.
The Hawks and the Fighting Scots traded baskets through the first two minutes and fifteen seconds and the Hawks held a 9-8 lead.
QU stretched its lead to 10 after a 9-0 run, capped off by a Demetrius Houston three-pointer.
Houston was the focal point of the Hawks offense in the first half, scoring 17 of his 22 points in the first half.
Tanner Stuckman and Marcus Hinton also combined for 15 points in the first half and QU took a 41-28 lead into the locker room.
The Hawks three-point shooting came alive at the start of the second half.
With QU leading 43-31, DeVries caught fire.
The sophomore scored 12 straight points for the Hawks going 4-4 from behind the arc, pushing the Hawks lead to 55-35.
DeVries hit two more three-pointers in the following minutes to give him six for the game. The Hawks led by as many as 29 with 13:51 to play in the second half.
The Hawks continued their hot shooting for the remainder of the second half and defeated the Fighting Scots by a final score of 95-55.
Demetrius Houston led the Hawks with 22 points on 9-11 shooting.
DeVries went 6-6 from behind the arc, finishing with a career-high 18 points.
Houston was also named to the QU Subway Holiday Classic All-Tournament team, averaging 20.5 points in the tournament.
CJ Carr of Missouri Southern was named tournament MVP. The Lions were also the tournament champions.
The Hawks improved to 3-8 on the year. QU returns to action on December 31st against MacMurray College at Pepsi Arena at 3:15 p.m.
