QUINCY, Ill. – The McKendree Bearcats outscored the Quincy Hawks 29-0 after halftime and beat the Hawks 42-14 Saturday evening (Nov.4).
The QU defense took the field first and forced a Bearcats three and out.
The Hawks fumbled the ensuing punt and gave McKendree the ball on the QU 19-yard line.
The QU defense held firm, holding the Bearcats to just a field goal.
QU took over their next possession at their own nine-yard line. After Andrew Rund (St. Louis, Mo./ St. Louis Priory) was sacked on the third play of the possession the Hawks would be forced to punt.
The Bearcats took the Hawks punt back 50 yards for a Bearcats touchdown and McKendree took a 10-0 lead.
The Hawks marched the ball all the way to the McKendree 25-yard line on their next possession. On fourth and two the Hawks were stopped a yard short of the sticks and turned the ball over on downs.
QU stepped up again on defense as Clayton Cole intercepted a pass in the end zone to keep the score at 10-0 on the Bearcats next possession.
The Hawks could not take advantage of the turnover and punted the ball back to the Bearcats.
Jordan Wynn forced another interception and gave the Hawks their second interception of the first quarter.
Again, QU couldn't take advantage and was forced to punt.
After another McKendree punt, the Hawks took over on their own 41-yard line.
QU finally got on the board on a 22-yard touchdown run by Shane Barrett.
The Bearcats kicked a field goal on their next possession to stretch the lead to 13-7 with 3:48 remaining in the first half.
A 44-yard kickoff return gave the Hawks the ball at the McKendree 46-yard line.
QU used the good field position to score on a six play, 46-yard drive to take a 14-13 lead. Shane Barrett scored again, this time on a 10-yard TD run.
With 1:15 remaining in the first half, McKendree would be forced to cover 92 yards in order to retake the lead.
After several long completions, the Bearcats set up for a 42-yard field goal attempt just before the half.
Adehkeem Brown blocked the Bearcats field goal attempt and the Hawks held a 14-13 lead at the half.
Michael Klotz's 43-yard field goal attempt was wide right on the Hawks opening possession of the second half and the Hawks were unable to extend their 14-13 lead.
The Bearcats took advantage and took the lead on a three-yard touchdown run by Reece Metcalf.
The Bearcats led 19-14.
After another Hawks punt, the Bearcats scored again to bring the lead to 22-14 on a 39-yard field goal.
A big run by Dylan Rosado had the Hawks threatening at the Bearcats 28-yard line. Trip Gibson was intercepted to give the ball back to McKendree.
McKendree used an 11 play, 85-yard drive to extend the lead to 28-14.
The Hawks again drove deep into Bearcat territory and had the ball at the McKendree 19-yard line.
Andrew Rund's pass was intercepted at the six-yard line and returned 94-yards for a Bearcat touchdown.
The Bearcats now led 35-14.
On the next play from scrimmage, Trey Mosley had his pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown.
This was the final score of the game and QU fell to McKendree 42-17.
QU now sits at 3-7, 1-5 in the GLVC.
The Hawks finish their season next Saturday (Nov. 11) against Missouri S&T.
