Hellenthal Earns First Win In Hawks 83-77 Win Over Illinois College

QUINCY, Ill. -  Head coach Ryan Hellenthal picked up his first career win as the Hawks defeated Illinois College 83-77 Friday night (Nov. 24).  

The Blueboys of Illinois College held the advantage in three-point field goals which allowed them to keep the game close throughout the contest.  

The Hawks presence on the glass allowed QU to grab a 25-15 lead midway through the first half.  

QU's inside game took control as Marcus Hinton and Marsalis Johnson combined for 36 points and 13 rebounds in the win.  

Quincy took a 13-point lead into the half as the Hawks led the Blueboys 44-31.  

Illinois College trimmed the lead to 44-39 as the Blueboys scored the first eight points of the second half.  

After a Marsalis Johnson free-throw, Ryan Briscoe scored back to back baskets to push the Hawks lead back to 10.  

Illinois College wouldn't go away as the Blueboys clawed back into the game, tying the score at 61-61 with 7:24 remaining.  

The Blueboys hit four three-pointers and went 14-16 from the foul line in the second half to keep the pressure on the Hawks.  

It was the Hawks free throw shooting that secured the Hawks first win of the season.  The Hawks went 10-12 from the line over the last five minutes of play. 

Tanner Stuckman also scored four of his 14 points in the final three minutes as QU outscored Illinois College 17-12 over the last five minutes to secure the 83-77 win.  

Marcus Hinton led the Hawks with 20 points and nine rebounds.  Marsalis Johnson scored 16 points on seven of nine shooting.  

Ryan Briscoe, Demetrius Houston, and Tanner Stuckman each also scored in double figures.  

Mason Speer led all scorers with 24 points, going 8-15 from the field and 7-7 at the foul line.  

The Hawks travel to Rockhurst University Thursday (Nov. 30) for their first GLVC matchup of the season.
