QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team dropped a road contest to the Missouri Western Griffons 63-61 Saturday afternoon (Nov. 18).
Despite a slow first half the Hawks and Griffons looked evenly matched throughout the contest.
At the midway point of the first half, Missouri Western held a 13-8 lead as both teams struggled to find the bottom of the basket in the early going.
Bobby Frasco and
Robby Dosier combined for 13 of the teams 21 points in the first half.
The Griffons end the first half on an 8-4 run to take a 29-21 lead into the half.
Both teams found their rhythm on the offensive end in the second half.
At the 16 minute mark, both teams traded baskets for the next several minutes. With 14 minutes the play, the score stood 40-33 in favor of Missouri Western.
Over the next 11 minutes, the Griffons opened up an 18 point lead with 3 minutes to play.
The Hawks responded with a 14-0 run capped off by a
Ryan Briscoe four-point play with 40 seconds remaining.
After a pair of free throws by Missouri Western, the Hawks trailed by six with 36 seconds to play.
Marsalis Johnson's layup brought the Hawks within four. Out of a timeout, the Hawks forced a turnover and
De'Andre Alexander sunk a pair of free throws to bring the Missouri Western lead to two.
The Hawks were forced to foul and sent the Griffons to the foul stripe.
Missouri Western missed both foul shots and the Hawks would have one final chance to win or tie the game with eight seconds remaining.
Off the inbounds play, the ball was deflected away and the Hawks were unable to have a chance to send the game to overtime.
The Hawks fall to 0-4 on the season and will travel to Illinois State next Wednesday (Nov. 22) for their next matchup.
