QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team fell to Walsh 75-55 in the Hawks season opener.
The Hawks got off to a slow start from the field and had several turnovers in the opening quarter and Walsh took advantage by grabbing a 22-10 lead.
The Cavaliers extended their lead to 28-14 before three straight jumpers by the Hawks brought the lead back to 28-18.
At the 5:33 mark Jessica Merino (Orland Park, IL / Carl Sandburg) brought the score to 30-20 in favor of Walsh. Both teams would go scoreless for the next four minutes of play before Alex Low (Beavercreek, OH / Beavercreek) knocked down a free-throw to bring the deficit to 30-21.
The Hawks trailed the Cavaliers 32-21 at the end of the first half.
QU trailed by as many as 17 in the third quarter before the Hawks made a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to just six.
Walsh responded by knocking down a three-pointer and getting a layup off a Hawk turnover to push the lead back to 11.
The Cavaliers pushed the lead to 17 points by the end of the third quarter.
A three-pointer by Anika Webster (Springfield, IL / Springfield) brought the Walsh lead to 53-39 to start the fourth quarter.
This was the closest the Hawks would bring the score as Walsh held on for a comfortable 75-55 win.
Anika Webster led the Hawks with 18 points and three rebounds. Maddie Spagnola (Elgin, IL / St. Edward Central) also added 10 points.
The Hawks will battle the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans tomorrow (Nov. 11) at 5:30 p.m in their next contest.
