Hawks Complete Comeback With Double Overtime Thriller

QUINCY, Ill. - Down 2-0 after the first 45 minutes of play, the QU women's soccer team scored two goals in the second half and another goal in the second overtime to beat William Jewell 3-2 in the final regular season game of the year.

Freshman Maddie Bauer (O'Fallon, MO / St. Dominic) scored in the 105th minute to complete the comeback for the Hawks and extend their winning streak to nine.

The Hawks surrendered two tough goals in the first half.

In the 31st minute, a deflection after an attempted clearance ended up at the feet of Hania Crow and she put the Cardinals up 1-0.

With just seconds remaining in the first half, the Cardinals were able to add a second goal after a deflection off the crossbar and went into the half up 2-0.

Despite outshooting the Cardinals 13-8 in the first half, the Hawks had nothing to show for it.

The Hawks offensive pressure continued in the second half as QU looked to cut into the two goal deficit.

In the 56th minute, the Hawks found the back of the net on a header by Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, Mo./ St. Dominic) off a corner kick by Bailey Greubel (St. Louis, Mo./ Nerix Hall).

It was Rief's GLVC leading 10th goal of the season.

The Hawks were nearing the end of regulation and looked to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

A shot by Bauer was saved in the 86th minute and the rebound ended up at the feet of Katie Heiligenstein (Wentzville, Mo./ St. Dominic).  Heiligenstein was able to find the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.

This was Heiligenstein's fifth goal of the season.

The Hawks and the Cardinals would settle the game in overtime.

Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period as the Hawks had two shots saved in the period.

In the 105th minute a cross was sent into the box and Bauer was able to beat the goalie to the bottom right corner of the goal to give the Hawks the 3-2 come from behind win.

The Hawks tallied 39 shots in the game with 19 being on goal.

Megan Swanson (St. Charles, Mo./ St. Dominic) made eight saves and picked up her 15th win of the year, good for second most in a single season in program history.

The Hawks finished the regular season 15-2, 13-1 in the GLVC. The Hawks will host the first round of the GLVC tournament Sunday at Legends Stadium.
