QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team picked up its seventh win of the season on senior day with a dramatic five-set victory over the Drury Panthers. The Hawks won the first set and after dropping two of the next three won a fifth set thriller.
In the first set, the Hawks and the Panthers looked evenly matched early. QU used a seven-point run to take a 13-7 lead midway through the opening set. With the Hawks leading 18-12, QU never looked back. The Hawks used a pair of Jessica LIcurgo (Goodyear, AZ/ Sandra Day O'Connor) kills to win the first set 25-18.
QU looked to gain the early advantage in the second set, grabbing an early 5-3 lead behind three Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, MI/ Fenton) kills. The Panthers fought back to tie it at 18-18.
Drury went on a five-point run to take the lead 23-18. The Hawks fought back to cut the lead to 24-21 with a pair of kills by Licurgo and Bekah Raebel (Waterford, WI/ Waterford Union).
The Panthers took the next point to win the set 25-21 and tie the match at one set apiece.
Both teams traded points to start the third set before the Hawks regained momentum with a five-point run to grab a 16-11 lead.
The Hawks held a 19-13 lead and looked to gain a 2-1 set advantage. Drury cut the lead to 21-18 but after two Panther attacking errors, QU completed the set win 25-19 to take a 2-1 set lead.
Drury jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set. The Hawks fought back to cut the lead to 5-4 and the teams traded points the remainder of the third set. The Panthers scored the final two points to win the fourth set 25-22, and force a deciding fifth set.
QU trailed 5-1 in the fifth set before errors by the Panthers allowed QU to tie the set at 5-5.
The Hawks and the Panthers went point for point for the remainder of the fifth set.
Licurgo and Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, WI/ Denmark) finished the fifth set with a pair of kills to win the set 18-16 and claim the five set victory for the Hawks.
Raebel lead the Hawks with 19 kills. Licrugo added 13 kills and McMonagle and Eastman both notched 10 kills.
The Hawks improved to 7-16 on the season and 4-8 in the GLVC. QU goes on the road to face UMSL Friday (Oct. 27) in its next GLVC contest.
