QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team traveled to Miami, Oklahoma for a neutral site game against the University of Texas-Permian Basin (UTPB) Saturday afternoon (Oct. 21).
The Hawks were unable to keep up with the strong running game of the Falcons and fell to UTPB 42-7.
The Falcons scored on their opening possession on the second play from scrimmage on a 66 yard by Brandon Infiesto to put them ahead 7-0.
UTPB attempted an onside kick after the touchdown but the Hawks recovered and began their opening possession on the Falcons 44-yard line.
Andrew Rund (St. Louis, MO./ St. Louis Priory) capped off the 44- yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run to tie the score 7-7.
Four straight possessions resulted in punts for both teams before the Falcons took possession with 3:57 remaining in the first quarter.
After an 11 play drive the Falcons took the lead on a 55-yard field goal by Bailey Giffen gave UTPB a 10-7 lead.
The Falcons tacked on another field goal, this time from 40 yards to take a 13-7 lead with 11:50 remaining in the first half.
QU's next possession ended on a turnover on downs at the Falcons 29-yard line. Rund found Jake Braskett (Wonder Lake, IL / McHenry) but Braskett was stopped a yard short of the first down and the Hawks gave the ball back to the Falcons.
UTPB scored on their next possession on a 10 play, 71-yard drive to bring the lead to 20-7. Quarterback Kameron Mathis scored on a zone read play from one-yard out to finish the drive.
After a pair of punts by both teams the Falcons pinned the Hawks deep inside their own seven-yard line. The Hawks were stopped on three plays and forced to punt from their own end zone.
The Falcons took over on the QU 32-yard line with nine seconds remaining in the first half. After an incompletion, Bailey Giffen lined up for his second field goal attempt from 50 plus yards.
Giffen was successful on his 50-yard attempt and the Falcons lead the Hawks 23-7 at the half.
The Hawks received the second half kickoff but were unable to find their way on offense and were forced into another three and out.
UTPB complied another touchdown drive to push the lead to 29-7.
The Hawks looked to cut into the Falcon lead after the QU defense forced a turnover on downs at the QU 43 yard line.
Andrew Rund rushed for a gain of 28 yards down to the UTPB 29-yard line. After a pair of short rushes, Rund took off down the left sideline before being stripped at the Falcon eight-yard line and his fumble was recovered by the Falcons.
UTPB mounted another scoring drive to bring the lead to 36-7.
Another touchdown by the Falcons in the beginning of the fourth quarter brought the score to 42-7.
The Hawks turned the ball over twice on fumbles and couldn't mount any offense to cut into the lead of the Falcons.
UTPB comfortably held on for the 42-7 win.
Andrew Rund finished with 193 yards of total offense to lead the Hawks. Keenan Stegall (Alton, IL / Alton) and Nate Ruckemann (McHenry, IL / McHenry) each had 10 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.
QU falls to 3-5 on the year and will host Truman State at 6 p.m. for Senior Day next Saturday (Oct. 28) at QU stadium.
