Prairie Stars Knock Off Hawks on Saturday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team struggled offensively on Saturday (Jan. 7) as the Hawks dropped a Great Lakes Valley Conference road contest, 82-53, to Illinois Springfield.
 
The Hawks (4-11, 1-4 GLVC), who had won their last two games, including a 64-61 win at McKendree on Thursday, shot just 24 percent (17-for-72) from the field in the game.
 
Quincy never led after the early minutes of the first quarter when the Prairie Stars (7-5, 1-3 GLVC) turned a 5-5 tie into an 11-5 lead. Junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) scored seven points in the quarter, but the Hawks trailed, 17-12, after the first.
 
UIS grew its lead to 34-18 by halftime as the Hawks managed just six points in the second period.
 
The Prairie Stars pulled away in the second half as they shot 47 percent (31-for-66) in the game and handed out 25 assists on 31 field goals.
 
Webster, playing in her hometown Saturday, scored a team-high 18 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. She hit 4-of-5 3-point attempts.  
 
Senior forward Cha Cha Williams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook/Seton Hill) added nine points and five rebounds. Senior reserve guard Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg/Moraine Valley CC) scored eight points and collected five rebounds.
 
Destiny Ramsey led five Prairie Stars in double figures with 18 points while Syerra Cunningham posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.
 
The Hawks will return to Pepsi Arena on Thursday (Jan. 12) at 5:15 p.m. when they take on No. 4 Bellarmine.
