Hawks Falter In Second Half Against #4 Knights

Quincy, Ill. —  The Quincy University women's basketball team battled Bellarmine University Thursday (Jan. 12) evening at Pepsi Arena, falling to the Knights 92-67.  Bellarmine came into the contest ranked 4th nationally in the latest WBCA coaches' poll.

Bellarmine (13-1, 5-0 GLVC) opened the game on a 15-2 run in the first six minutes of action.  Quincy trailed 27-10 at the end of the first quarter.  The Hawks (4-12, 1-5 GLVC) would claw their way back into the game by going on a 14-0 run to end the first half.  Led by freshman Jessica Merino's (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) six points over that stretch the Hawks trimmed the Bellermine lead to 42-35 heading into the locker room.

At the start of the third quarter the Hawks trailed 44-42 with a chance to tie or take the lead but a turnover by QU led to a layup for Bellarmine's Sarah Galvin, who scored a team-high 21 points.

Turnovers plagued the Hawks for most of the game as QU committed 24, leading to 26 points for the Knights.

Merino scored a career high with 14 points.  Anika Webster (Springfield, IL/Springfield) also added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks.

Quincy will take on conference opponent Southern Indiana Saturday (January 14) in Pepsi Arena. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
