Fourth Quarter Run Lifts Hawks To GLVC Win at McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball started the fourth quarter on a 14-2 run to snap a tie game and held on late for a 64-61 win at McKendree on Thursday (Jan. 5) night at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center.
 
The win was the Hawks' (4-10, 1-3 GLVC) first in conference play and first on the road this season.
 
The game started sluggishly with the teams combining for 14 turnovers in the first quarter. The Hawks were able to generate good looks at the basket on dribble penetration and kick-outs, helping them shoot 43 percent (6-for-14) in the quarter, mostly on jump shots.
 
McKendree (9-4, 0-3 GLVC) led by as many as five points in the second quarter and took a 26-23 lead into halftime.
 
After surrendering a basket on McKendree's first possession of the third quarter, the Hawks reeled off the next nine points with five coming from senior guard Lauren Gronewold (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and four from senior forward Cha Cha Williams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook/Seton Hill).
 
Quincy led by three, 37-34, after a mid-range jumper by sophomore guard Taylor Hickey (Keokuk, Iowa/Burlington Notre Dame) with 52 seconds left in the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Abby Smith tied the game heading into the fourth.
 
Senior guard Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg/Moraine Valley CC) started the quarter with a 3-pointer to start a 14-2 run that pushed the Hawks to a 51-39 lead. Junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) had a pair of buckets in the stretch, including a three-point play to cap the run.
 
The Hawks still led by 10 points after a couple free throws by sophomore guard Jessie Rabas (De Pere, Wis.) with 1:25 to play. She made two more to cut push the lead to 61-53 before senior guard Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sierra/Southeastern CC) hit three of four free throws to close the game. A 3-pointer at the buzzer by Jordan Heberg made it a one-possession game.
 
All 10 Hawks who played made a field goal, led by Williams' 16 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Rabas scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter, making all six of her free throws and a 3-pointer. Barnes chipped in eight points while Webster added seven. Gronewold scored seven points and dished out six assists.
 
The Hawks forced 25 turnovers and had a 20-10 advantage in points off turnovers. QU had 13 assists on 21 field goals. They shot 42 percent (21-for-50) from the field.
 
The Hawks will continue their road swing on Saturday (Jan. 7) when they take on Illinois Springfield in the state capital. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
