Hawks' Late Defense Stifles Miners In Tight Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team got all it wanted from Missouri S&T and then some, but the Hawks prevailed with strong defense in the closing minutes, 85-81, on Thursday (Jan. 26) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (17-4, 7-3 GLVC) held the Miners without a point in the final 2:45 as the home team ran off eight straight points to close out the game. Missouri S&T's last made field goal came with 4:27 remaining. After that, the Hawks forced eight straight misses and did not allow an offensive rebound.

The Miners (8-9, 2-8 GLVC), who led by as many as seven with five minutes left in the game, held an 81-77 lead before senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) split a pair of free throws.

The Hawks then forced a stop, but Washington was fouled attacking the rim and missed both at the line to keep the Miners ahead, 81-78. After another QU stop and rebound, the Hawks got in transition as senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) scooped in a layup to cut it to 81-80 with 1:25 to play.

Ervin Sarajlic missed a 3-pointer on a late shot clock on Missouri S&T's next possession and Washington collected the rebound. The Hawks then slowed the ball down and got the ball to senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West), who missed on a jump hook from eight feet, but senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.) cleaned up the miss and tipped in the go-ahead bucket with 31.2 seconds remaining.

The Miners' top shooter, Jalen Myers, clanked his 3-pointer on the next possession and Washington corralled the rebound before being fouled out of bounds in front of the Miners' bench. The senior hit the pair from the line to make it an 84-81 game.

The Miners elected to go for a 2-pointer on their next possession, but Juwan Miller's layup rolled off the rim and McGaughey gathered the rebound. He hit the second of two free throws to ice the game.

The Hawks led by as many as nine points on multiple occasions in the first half, using an 11-2 run to break a 7-7 tie.

Quincy took a 45-39 lead into halftime as Washington scored 12 of his 20 points in the first half. Sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) scored 11 points in the first half and finished with 15 on 4-for-6 shooting.

The Miners got back in the game early in the second half as the Hawks committed three straight turnovers before Quinn Poythress hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 61-60 with 11:57 to play.

Missouri S&T led by as many as seven points after a 3-pointer, followed by a transition slam by Telloy Simon stretched the lead to 77-70.

Washington settled the run with a corner 3-pointer followed by back-to-back buckets by Tagarelli. That's when the Hawks' defense locked in.

Tagarelli paced the Hawks with 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting to go with eight rebounds. Washington added 20 points and seven rebounds while Hinton scored his 15 points in 22 minutes off the bench. McGaughey had 13 points and seven rebounds while Senor filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Rokas Paulauskas registered a double-double for the Miners with 16 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 7-for-8 from the floor. Simon was sparkplug off the bench with 115 points in 23 minutes.

The Hawks held the Miners to just 38 percent (27-for-71) shooting for the game, including a 35 percent (13-for-37) mark in the second half.

The Hawks will return to the Pepsi Arena floor on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 3:15 p.m. when they take on Drury (13-5, 6-4 GLVC). The Panthers lost at Truman State, 93-60, on Thursday.
