Hawks Back In First With Win Over Drury

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball turned in one of its best all-around efforts of the season in knocking off visiting Drury, 78-64, in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Saturday (Feb. 2) afternoon at Pepsi Arena.

The win, paired with Truman's loss to Missouri S&T, pulls the Hawks (18-4, 8-3 GLVC) into a tie with the Bulldogs for first place in the GLVC West with seven games left in conference play.

Neither team had more than a seven-point lead in a first half that saw four lead changes and two tie scores. The Hawks held a 34-27 lead after a layup by senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis./Kirkwood CC) with 3:38 left in the first half, but the Panthers (13-6, 6-5 GLVC) cut the lead down to one point with 1:17 remaining. Three free throws over the final stretch of the half by sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) gave QU a 37-33 lead at halftime.

The Hawks used a 10-2 run at the start of the second half to stretch their lead to 47-35 as QU forced three missed shots and two turnovers in that stretch. In total, the Panthers turned the ball over 17 times and the Hawks turned them into 20 points.

Quincy went up by as many as 13 points after a layup by senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) with 9:41 to play.

The Panthers trimmed away at the lead, but the Hawks never let them get hot from outside, limiting the visitors to just four 3-pointers. DU cut it to five points, 63-58, with 4:12 left, but senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill.) cleared out for an iso late in the next possession and dropped in a 3-pointer to push the lead back to eight.

The Hawks then forced six scoreless possessions in the Panthers' next seven trips as they stretched the lead to 16 into the final minute.

Tagarelli led the Hawks with 27 points on 10-for-16 shooting and seven rebounds. Senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) went 7-for-9 from the line to finish with 13 points and Senor tallied 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting. He had just one turnover in 37 minutes.

Drury forward Joshua Palmer led the visitors with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Isaac Johnson and John Williams had 11 points each. Quincy held DU's leading scorer, Tevin Foster, to just nine points on 2-of-8 shooting.

The Hawks shot 52 percent (27-for-52) from the floor and held the Panthers to 46 percent (20-for-44) shooting, including a 40 percent (10-for-25) mark in the second half.

The Hawks will continue their four-game homestand on Saturday (Feb. 2) when they welcome Saint Joseph's to Pepsi Arena. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m.
