Miles, Walters Named CBN Preseason All-Americans

QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy University senior outfielder Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) and senior second baseman Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) have been named Midwest Region Preseason All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper the outlet announced in its most recent January issue.

CBN also cited junior shortstop Brynn Martinez (Southwest Ranches, Fla.) as a Player to Watch in the Midwest Region and left-handed starting pitcher Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) as a Newcomer to Watch.

Miles will be in his fourth season as a starter for the Hawks and will be slated in as Quincy's center fielder in 2017. He hit .384 last season with seven home runs and 50 RBI. Miles also totaled 15 doubles and led the team with 13 stolen bases. He committed just one error in 142 chances.

Miles is on pace to break the Hawks' all-time hits record, currently held by Mitchell Broughton. Miles has 198 hits in his career, including 88 last season.

Walters arrived at Quincy last season, showing abundant power from the second base position. He was third on the team with 12 home runs and 60 RBI while batting .353. He also rapped 15 doubles on the season. Walters hit .474 (9-for-19) in four NCAA Tournament games.

Martinez returns as the Hawks' leadoff hitter and starting shortstop. He batted .331 last season with 78 hits, 11 doubles, six home runs and 39 RBI. He also scored 68 runs and stole 11 bases. He also saw a drastic improvement in his defense from his freshman to sophomore season, raising his fielding percentage from .891 to .941 last season by cutting his error total nearly in half from 28 to 15.

Haynes will be in his first season in a Hawks' uniform and will likely be penciled at the top of the QU rotation. He has one year of eligibility remaining after spending four seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization, which drafted him out of high school in the 13th Round of the MLB Draft in 2012. Haynes, a left-hander, pitched two seasons in the Arizona League and one year in the Pioneer League in the Royals' system.

The Hawks went 39-18 last season and earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional for the second straight year. Quincy, under the direction of seventh-year head coach Josh Rabe, is ranked No. 22 in the initial Division II Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason rankings.
