Offensive Rebounding, Turnovers Key Hawks' Win at Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire to snap a three-game losing streak and beat host Maryville, 90-79, on Saturday (Jan. 21) afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Maloney Arena in St. Louis.

The Hawks (16-4, 6-3 GLVC), who had dropped three in a row after winning 15 straight, righted themselves before starting the second half of the GLVC schedule with a four-game homestand next week.

Senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) led the Hawks with 23 points on 8-for-11 shooting to go with 15 rebounds for his third double-double in the last four games. McGaughey has now scored at least 20 points in five-game stretch where he is averaging 25 points and 11.2 rebounds while shooting 66 percent (43-for-65) from the floor.

On Saturday, the Hawks led by just a point, 13-12, after back-to-back threes by Jimmy Barton with 14:48 left in the first half. The Hawks scored the next 10 points over four minutes to stretch their lead to 23-12. Senior center Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) started the run with three straight points, sophomore guard Damon Patterson (Florissant, Mo./Chaminade) hit a 3-pointer and McGaughey capped the run with a jumper.

Quincy stretched its lead to 46-27 at halftime, following Patterson's mid-range jumper.

The Hawks' lead went as high as 21 points in the second half before a 10-0 run by Maryville (7-14, 1-8 GLVC) cut the lead to 50-39 with 16:36 to play. The teams then traded 7-0 runs, but senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) hit a 3-pointer with 11:13 left to increase the Hawks' lead back to 63-46.

Senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) pushed the lead to 19 points with a three-point play with 6:25 to go. The lead briefly slipped into single digits in the last two minutes, but the Hawks went 6-for-8 from the line in that stretch to seal the win.

Despite the Saints shooting 51 percent (30-for-59) from the floor, the Hawks forced 21 turnovers, turning them into 17 points. The Hawks also collected 14 offensive rebounds and led in second chance points, 18-3.

Washington totaled 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting while senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis.) filled the stat sheet with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Meyer hit three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. Barton paced the Saints with 27 points and six assists.

The Hawks will return to Pepsi Arena on Thursday (Jan. 26) at 7:30 p.m. when they take on Missouri S&T.
