First Half Burst Lifts Hawks To Season-Opening Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team got off to a fast start to the 2016 season on Sunday (Sept. 4), scoring three times in the first half on its way to a 3-1 win over Northeastern State at Legends Stadium.

The win gives the Hawks (1-0) a leg up in the chase for the trophy in the QU Alumni Cup, Presented by The Shierling Family. In the Cup's first game Sunday, Lindenwood and Truman tied, 1-1. QU now plays the Lindenwood on Monday (Sept. 5) night at 7:30 p.m. with Truman and Northeastern State squaring off at 5 p.m.

The Hawks spent nearly two weeks in Germany earlier this summer in preparation for this season, playing a variety of levels of teams. They went 5-0-2 on the trip.

That execution has carried over into the regular season as the Hawks were firing in midseason form early on.

In just the fifth minute, the Hawks won a free kick about six yards behind the penalty area on the left side. Junior defender Chris McArthur (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) stepped over the ball and drove it past the wall and the outstretched arms of NSU keeper Jackson Biles to give QU a 1-0 lead. It was just his second career goal.

In the 21st minute, redshirt-freshman forward Jordan Stephens (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) came free down the left side and sent in a cross from near the end line. Senior midfielder Taylor Reis (Quincy, Ill./Quincy Notre Dame) ran onto it and struck a laser to give QU a 2-0 lead.

Northeastern State got on the board against the run of play in the 31st minute as Trevor Reed made a weaving run on a counterattack and fired from 20 yards just inside the right post.

Just 94 seconds later, the Hawks recouped their two-goal lead. A shot by redshirt-senior midfielder Scott Ladi (Florissant, Mo./De Smet) was deflected by an NSU defender and fell at the feet of redshirt-senior reserve forward Pete Condol (Mount Carmel, Ill.), who laced his shot from 12 yards.

The last time the Hawks scored three goals in the first half was Oct. 2, 2015 when they beat William Jewell, 5-0.

Northeastern State tried to get back in the game in the second half, out-shooting the Hawks, 5-3, and getting more of the possession, but the Hawks maintained their two-goal lead.

Overall, the Hawks held a 13-12 advantage in shots while the RiverHawks kept an 8-7 lead in shots on goal. Senior keeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) made seven saves.
